Hello! My name is Abdool Salim, and I proudly call the lush lands of Coast 48 Pomona Essequibo in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana my home. As a dedicated farmer, I cultivate the rich soil that has fed generations, growing a variety of crops that not only nourish my family but also contribute to the vibrant local markets. The sweet taste of ripe mangoes, the aroma of fresh cassava, and the warmth of the community are just a few things that make my homeland special.
Having spent time in both Guyana and the diaspora, I understand the unique bond we share with our culture, whether we’re enjoying a hearty plate of pepperpot with family or reminiscing about the canje and the lively markets of Georgetown. The connection to our roots remains strong, even from afar, as friends and family gather to celebrate our traditions, from the colorful festivals that light up our communities to the shared stories over a pot of cook-up rice. I feel blessed to be part of a community that values its heritage, even as we navigate the challenges of a changing economy.
As I continue my work on the farm, I am always reminded of the resilience and strength of the Guyanese spirit.
