About AKRAM SHAW

About Akram Shaw

Hello! I’m Akram Shaw, a proud resident of the Essequibo Coast, nestled in the heart of Pomeroon-Supenaam. Growing up in this vibrant region, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for our unique culture, which is infused with the rich flavors of our cuisine—think pepperpot, metemgee, and the mouthwatering taste of fresh fish from our bountiful waters. My roots are firmly planted here, but I also cherish the connections with the Guyanese diaspora, as our stories and experiences unite us, whether it's through a shared love of our beautiful floating bridges or our spirited debates over the rightful ownership of the New River!

Living in Guyana, I understand the pride we take in our identity. We are not just Caribbean; we are uniquely Guyanese, shaped by our diverse heritage of Indigenous peoples, African, Indian, Chinese, and European influences. While some may overlook us on the South American map, those who know the beauty of our landscapes—from the majestic Kanuku Mountains to the serenity of our coastal wetlands—understand the treasures we hold. I often hear fellow Guyanese express their longing for home, and I feel that too, especially when munching on a slice of black cake during the holidays or enjoying a raucous cricket match with friends.

As I continue my journey here on the Essequibo Coast, I am dedicated to fostering connections within our community and beyond. I stand by our strengths, whether in our resilience or our vibrant festivals, and I am always excited to share our culture with the world. So, let’s celebrate what makes us Guyanese—our food, our history, and our unwavering spirit—because, at the end of the day, we are all part of this incredible journey together.
