Hello! My name is Alia Vanbattenbur, and I’m proud to call River Saxacalli, Essequibo in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region my home. Growing up in this vibrant community has instilled in me a deep appreciation for Guyana’s rich cultural heritage, especially our diverse culinary scene. From savoring the best Chinese dishes that rival those found anywhere in the Caribbean to indulging in our local delicacies like pepperpot and cook-up rice, food is a central part of who we are.
As a passionate resident of Guyana, I take pride in our beautiful landscapes, from the enchanting waterways of the Essequibo River to the lush rainforests that blanket our countryside. My experiences here have shaped my understanding of our nation’s place within the Caribbean community, especially with Georgetown being the headquarters of CARICOM. This connection to our Caribbean neighbors reminds me of our collective journey and the importance of unity, even as many Guyanese have ventured far and wide, from the USA to India, to connect with our roots.
