Hello! My name is Annie Maria De Camp, and I proudly call the vibrant community of Essequibo Present Hope on the East Bank of Pomeroon-Supenaam my home. Growing up amidst the lush landscapes of Guyana, I have developed a deep appreciation for our rich culture and heritage. From the melodious sounds of our folk music to the tantalizing aromas of traditional dishes like duck curry and pepperpot, my life here is infused with the flavors and rhythms that make Guyana truly special.
As a resident of Guyana, I engage deeply with my community, understanding that our diverse backgrounds—whether from the Indigenous peoples, Afro-Guyanese, Indo-Guyanese, or Chinese-Guyanese—contribute to a unique and harmonious society. The stories and histories we share, from the River Parapi Settlement to our bustling markets filled with colorful fruits and spices, paint a picture of resilience and unity. It's this connection that inspires me to keep our traditions alive, especially through food, which serves as a centerpiece for gatherings and celebrations.
I believe that our culinary heritage, such as enjoying sweet and sour chicken or indulging in a refreshing pineapple drink, can bring us together, bridging generations and communities, both locally and in the diaspora.
