As a fisherman, I’ve spent countless sunrises casting my nets into the vibrant waters, embracing the rhythms of the river. The Pomeroon River is not just a source of livelihood for me; it’s a place rich with memories, from family gatherings over a fresh catch to quiet moments watching the sun dip below the horizon.
Growing up in this diverse community, I’ve been influenced by the rich blend of cultures that define Guyana. Be it the aroma of pepperpot wafting through the air during festive gatherings or the sound of laughter echoing during the Mashramani celebrations, these experiences have instilled in me a deep appreciation for our heritage. I often reminisce about the days spent with family in places like Kabakaburi and Hooboodie, which hold a special place in my heart.
Though many of us in the diaspora may feel a longing for home, I carry a piece of Guyana with me wherever I go. Whether I’m sharing stories of the river with friends abroad or introducing them to our unique cuisine, I strive to keep our culture alive.
