Greetings! My name is Asha Gilbert-Gango, and I proudly call the beautiful Essequibo Coast my home. Nestled in the heart of Pomeroon-Supenaam, I enjoy the lush landscapes and vibrant communities that define our unique culture. As a resident of the 46 New Housing Scheme, I have deep connections to this region, where the mighty Pomeroon River flows and memories of home-cooked meals, especially oxtail pepperpot, linger in my heart. Nothing compares to the warmth of a traditional Guyanese gathering, where laughter and stories are shared over a plate of rice and peas alongside fresh fish from the coast.
Living in Guyana, I have a front-row seat to a melting pot of cultures that reflect our rich heritage. The blend of Indigenous, African, Indian, and European influences shapes our celebrations, from Mashramani to Diwali, and makes our food scene incredibly diverse. I find joy in sharing my experiences with the diaspora community, where many of us stay connected despite the miles that separate us. Like the many Guyanese who have made their homes in Barbados and beyond, I cherish the bonds formed through shared experiences and stories, as well as the vibrant cultural exchange that continues to thrive.
Each day, I am reminded of the value of community and the strength we draw from our roots. Whether it’s the aroma of cook-up rice wafting through the air or a visit to the bustling Bartica market, I am constantly inspired by the resilience and spirit of our people.
