Hello and welcome! My name is Akshay Goukaran, and I proudly call the Essequibo Coast my home. Nestled along the lush banks of the Pomeroon River, my roots run deep in the vibrant culture of Guyana. From the tantalizing aroma of cook-up rice wafting through the air to the festive sounds of Soca music during Mashramani, my life is a celebration of our rich heritage. As a resident right here on Public Road New Road, I cherish the daily interactions with my community and the warmth of my neighbors, who always greet each other with an affectionate “A wahhhhh u duuuuuu deeeee!”
Growing up in Guyana, I’ve developed a strong appreciation for our diverse traditions and the stories that bind us together. Whether it’s sharing a hearty plate of pepperpot during Christmas or enjoying a sweet treat of guava cheese with friends, these moments reflect our unique Guyanese spirit. I am deeply proud of my Indo-Guyanese heritage and feel a connection to the broader diaspora, which has amplified our voices and showcased our culture on platforms far and wide. It’s incredible to connect with fellow Guyanese from around the world, hearing comments like “Proud Guyanese American” that resonate with our shared experiences.
