Greetings! My name is Shamil Baird, and I proudly call Baramita in the Barima-Waini region of Guyana my home. Nestled in the heart of our beautiful rainforest, Baramita is rich in natural wonders and vibrant culture. Growing up here has instilled in me a deep appreciation for our lush landscapes, from the tranquil flows of the Pomeroon River to the lush greenery that surrounds our community. I cherish the opportunity to connect with nature while embracing the diverse cultures that make Guyana so unique.
As a resident, I take pride in sharing the culinary delights of our homeland, especially dishes like pepperpot and metemgee, which reflect the melting pot of our Indo and Afro-Guyanese heritage. The flavors of our food tell stories of our ancestors, bringing together East Indian and African influences that have shaped our traditions. I often find joy in hosting gatherings, where friends and family come together to enjoy home-cooked meals and share tales of our ancestors, fostering a sense of belonging that resonates with our diaspora community, especially those in Richmond Hill, New York, often referred to as Little Guyana.
