Nestled along the serene Pomeroon River, my life is enriched by the lush landscapes and vibrant community that surround me. Growing up in this beautiful region has given me a deep appreciation for our rich culture, from the flavorful dishes like pepperpot and cook-up rice to the lively celebrations of Mashramani and Diwali. The warmth of my people is reflected in our hospitality, and I cherish the close-knit bonds formed over shared meals and stories.
As a resident of Maria's on Second Street, I often find myself reflecting on the importance of our local landmarks, whether it’s visiting the Cocorite Landing or exploring the winding waterways that connect us to the rest of Guyana. The Essequibo River, a source of life and inspiration, serves as a reminder of the unique geography that defines our nation—where the North flows into Venezuela, and the South bridges with Brazil. I believe these connections foster a sense of unity and resilience among our diaspora, reminding us that no matter where we are in the world, our roots in Guyana remain strong.
