Greetings! I’m Celine Chan, a proud resident of the Essequibo Coast in Pomeroon-Supenaam, where the vibrant culture and rich heritage of Guyana come alive every day. Growing up amidst the lush greenery and flowing rivers has instilled in me a deep appreciation for our unique way of life. Whether it’s enjoying a plate of hearty rice and egg ball with a side of stew or taking a stroll down John Street, the flavors and sights of my hometown remind me of the warmth of our community.
As someone who values the connections we have with our roots, I often reflect on the rich history of our people—like the journey of my ancestors who came from distant shores, much like many others who have settled here over the years. It’s fascinating to think about how our diverse backgrounds, from the Indian indentured laborers of the 19th century to the legacy of the indigenous peoples, shape our identity today. The stories we share, often filled with laughter and camaraderie, bring us closer to one another, whether we’re reminiscing about the old days or cheering on our favorite cricket team.
