Greetings! My name is Chitramatti Dhanraj, and I proudly call the vibrant community of West Coast Demerara home. Growing up in Essequibo Islands-West Demerara, I have been shaped by the rich cultural fabric of Guyana, where the fusion of Indian and African heritage is celebrated daily. Just like many of my fellow Guyanese, I cherish the flavors of our diverse cuisine—nothing beats the satisfaction of a hearty duck curry accompanied by fluffy roti. As we often say, “2300 fuh 2 roti an lil piece a duck”—a true testament to our love for food and community.
Living in this beautiful land, surrounded by lush landscapes and the majestic Essequibo River, I find joy in sharing the stories and experiences of our people. Guyana is a place of resilience and growth; we have come a long way, and I am proud of the progress our younger generations are making. However, like many, I feel the need to address the challenges we face, including mental health issues that have gained attention worldwide. It’s important that we engage in conversations about our reality, as well as our achievements, to foster understanding and support.
As a member of the Guyanese diaspora, I remain connected to my roots even from afar. I enjoy exchanging stories about our homeland, whether it’s reminiscing about the lively celebrations of Phagwah or simply enjoying the sound of a tassa drum in the distance. Let’s continue to uplift each other and showcase the beauty that is Guyana—because there is no Guyana without both our Indian and African influences!
