Growing up in a community steeped in the traditions of the Pomeroon River, I've been fortunate to witness the daily life that intertwines the diverse influences of African, Indian, and Indigenous cultures. This blend is a cornerstone of our identity, celebrated in our music, festivals, and, of course, our food!
One of my favorite culinary delights is "doubles," a beloved street food that traces its roots back to Indian indentured laborers. The story of how it got its name—a request for "double" bara topped with channa—reflects the ingenuity and adaptability of our people. Whether it’s enjoying a plate of pepperpot during Christmas or a sweet treat of coconut drops, each bite tells a story of our journey and resilience.
