Hello! I’m Cindy Benjamin, a proud resident of River Baracaro Island in the vibrant Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. Growing up surrounded by the lush landscapes and rich biodiversity of the Pomeroon River has instilled a deep appreciation for our natural heritage. The sweet scent of ripe fruits, especially our beloved mangoes, fills the air during the harvest months, and I often find myself reminiscing about family gatherings where we indulge in the local delicacies like cook-up rice and pepperpot.
As a member of the diaspora community, I cherish the connections with fellow Guyanese around the globe. Whether it’s sharing stories about our unique neighborhoods or discussing the challenges we face back home, the camaraderie is strong. I often reflect on the spirited conversations we have about how “in Guyana we do not talk about that no more,” yet we can’t help but reminisce about our roots, from the beauty of our landscapes to the warmth of our people.
Living here, I’ve witnessed the transformation of our region, and while we aspire for development, it’s essential to honor our past. The Pomeroon River, with its melodious flow, continues to be a source of inspiration for me.
