Hello! My name is Collin Benjamin, and I proudly call River Baracaro Island in Pomeroon-Supenaam my home. As a sawman, I am intimately connected to the lush landscapes that surround me, where the rich timber of our rainforests has sustained generations. Growing up in Guyana, I’ve been shaped by the vibrant culture of our people, from the beautiful sounds of the tassa drums during Mashramani to the irresistible aroma of a well-cooked pepper pot simmering during family gatherings.
Having roots that run deep in this land, I am a true representative of our diverse heritage. My father was from a lineage that proudly carries the Indian surname Jaman Singh, and I cherish the blend of cultures that makes Guyana unique. Whether it's enjoying a plate of curry chana with roti or celebrating festivals with my community, I find joy in the traditions that connect us, both here and in the diaspora. No matter where I wander, the warmth of home always calls me back, and I carry that spirit with me.
To me, being Guyanese means embracing our identity—celebrating our Caribbean roots while recognizing that we are nestled within the South American landscape. From the tranquil banks of the Pomeroon River to the bustling markets of Georgetown, our culture is rich and diverse.
