Hello! My name is Compton Jankie, and I’m a proud welder based in Reliance, Pomeroon-Supenaam. Growing up along the beautiful Pomeroon River, I’ve always been inspired by the rich culture and community that surrounds me. From the sweet aroma of cook-up rice and fried fish wafting through the air to the vibrant celebrations during Mashramani, my roots are deeply intertwined with the essence of Guyana. I find joy in working with my hands, crafting metal into functional art while staying connected to the local traditions that define our identity.
My passion for welding has not only allowed me to contribute to my community but also to connect with fellow Guyanese both at home and abroad. Many of us share stories of our childhood along the riverbanks, like playing near the Lower Pomeroon or enjoying the fresh fruits from our gardens. The warmth and resilience of our diaspora community remind me that no matter where we go, we carry a piece of Guyana with us. I often reminisce about the times spent at local gatherings, where laughter and music echoed through our neighborhoods, bringing us closer together.
As I continue my journey as a welder, I aim to uphold the values of hard work, integrity, and community spirit that have been instilled in me since childhood. I look forward to creating not just structures, but connections that celebrate our shared heritage and the dreams we hold for a more equitable future, where everyone can thrive regardless of their starting point.
