Hello! My name is Daniram Mahadeo, a proud carpenter hailing from the beautiful Essequibo Coast, specifically Back Street Paradise in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. Growing up in this vibrant community, I've always been surrounded by the rich diversity of our culture, which is a blend of Indigenous, African, East Indian, and Portuguese influences. This melting pot is not just evident in our traditions, but also in our food—who can resist a plate of curry chicken with roti or some delectable pepperpot? My work as a carpenter allows me to honor my heritage through craftsmanship, whether it's building homes or creating pieces that reflect our unique way of life.
Even though I may not have traveled far, the stories of my ancestors resonate deeply in my work. My mother's roots in Berbice remind me of the tranquil villages where life moves at a slower pace, filled with laughter and camaraderie. For many in our diaspora, like my friend from Brixton who shares my love for kulerage, there is a longing for the simplicity and beauty that Guyana offers. We may not always be on the map, but our spirit shines brightly, and I feel a strong connection to my fellow Guyanese, no matter where we are in the world.
