Hello! I’m Darrel Benn, a proud labourer from the Essequibo Coast, specifically the 85 Housing Scheme in Pomeroon-Supenaam. Growing up in this vibrant community, I’ve come to appreciate the rich culture and traditions that Guyana has to offer—from the delicious pepperpot that fills our homes during the holidays to the stunning landscapes that grace our rivers and coastlines. The Essequibo River, with its historical significance and natural beauty, holds a special place in my heart, especially when I reminisce about the stories shared by elders as we gathered by the water’s edge.
Living on the west side, I can confidently say that it truly is the best side! Whether it's indulging in fresh catch from the Pom River or enjoying a weekend cook-up with friends and family, there's always something delightful to experience here. I am also deeply connected to the Guyanese diaspora, who bring a piece of home wherever they go. I often hear tales of life abroad, and while it might be tempting to chase after that big “moooooooooneyyy,” I cherish the simplicity of our daily lives and the bonds we share in our homeland.
As I navigate life as a labourer, I remain committed to my roots and my culture. I firmly believe that understanding our heritage is vital, and I encourage everyone to learn the true pronunciation of our local names and landmarks.
