Hello! I’m Debra Correia, a dedicated teacher residing in Upper Pom River Grant Finland Siriki, nestled in the heart of the Pomeroon-Supenaam region. Growing up along the banks of the Pomeroon River, I’ve always cherished the rich culture and vibrant community that surrounds me. The lush landscapes and the warmth of my neighbors have shaped my passion for education and community service. As an educator, I strive to empower my students with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate the world while staying connected to their roots. I often draw inspiration from our local heritage, celebrating the traditions of the Pomeroon and the stories of our ancestors. I believe that fostering a sense of pride in one’s culture is essential, and I encourage my students to embrace the unique aspects of being Guyanese, whether in our cuisine, like the beloved black cake, or in our vibrant festivals.
Having experienced the Guyanese diaspora's vibrant discussions, I understand the importance of our connections, both locally and globally. I often reflect on comments from our community that highlight the need for growth and improvement, like the sentiments expressed about Georgetown. My commitment is to contribute positively to our society, ensuring that our cultural heritage remains strong and that our youth have the tools they need to thrive, whether they decide to stay in Guyana or venture abroad.
