As a domestic worker, I find joy in caring for homes and families, bringing a touch of that warm, Guyanese hospitality that we are known for. Growing up in Guyana, I’ve been surrounded by the aromas of our beloved local dishes, from pepperpot to cook-up rice, and I cherish the memories of family gatherings filled with laughter and storytelling. My heart is deeply rooted in our community, where we support each other, whether it’s through sharing a meal (and let’s be honest, $2000 could barely cover a feast and a drink! 😂) or by conversing about our history, like how the Essequibo region has been a focal point of our national identity. These rich discussions and the love for our homeland inspire me every day.
Though I currently reside in Guyana, I have a deep appreciation for our diaspora, as I know many of us migrate but carry the spirit of our homeland wherever we go.
