Hello! My name is Deochand Singh, and I proudly call the beautiful Essequibo Coast home. Growing up in the vibrant community of Hampton on the Pomeroon-Supenaam, I have spent my days as a fisherman, working the bountiful waters that our ancestors have relied on for generations. The rhythm of the river and the call of the wild have shaped my life, and I cherish every moment spent casting nets and sharing stories with fellow fishermen.
While the capital, Georgetown, has its ups and downs—some may say it’s a bit "stink" at times—there’s something special about the peaceful villages along the west coast where I grew up. From the sweet taste of ripe mangoes from River Mango Creek to the serene beauty of Lower Pomeroon River, my heart lies in the simplicity and richness of our local cultures. I often reminisce about the gatherings where we enjoy dishes like cook-up rice and pepperpot, surrounded by laughter and the warmth of family and friends.
As I navigate life here in Regina, I feel a strong connection to the Guyanese diaspora, sharing our unique heritage and experiences. I hope to inspire others to appreciate the beauty of our homeland and encourage a deeper understanding of our culture, even from afar. Let’s keep the spirit of Guyana alive, wherever we may roam!
Pomeroon-Supenaam lies on the Atlantic coast northwest of Georgetown. Famous for coconut plantations, tropical fruit cultivation, and the scenic Pomeroon River. Anna Regina serves as the regional capital.
