Hello! I’m Dhanuja Bheensane, a proud resident of Reliance Housing on the beautiful Essequibo Coast of Guyana. Growing up in this vibrant region, I have been deeply influenced by the rich cultural heritage and the warm community spirit that defines our way of life. From enjoying traditional meals like roti and curry to celebrating festivals with my Indo-Guyanese friends and family, my roots are firmly planted in the traditions that make Guyana unique.
As someone who has witnessed the changing landscapes of our society, I am acutely aware of the historical and political shifts that have shaped our identity. The years of dictatorship from 1964-1992 brought challenges and prompted many of my fellow Indo-Guyanese to migrate, creating a strong diaspora community across the USA, Canada, and the UK. Despite the distance, we maintain our connections through cultural exchanges, often reminiscing about home-cooked meals and the comforting flavors of our beloved Guyanese cuisine.
Living in Regina has allowed me to share my culture with others while keeping the essence of my homeland alive. Whether it’s through cooking, storytelling, or gathering with fellow Guyanese, I strive to keep the spirit of Essequibo vibrant and alive, bridging the gap between our past and present.
