Hello! I’m Dharshanie Prashad, a proud resident of Coast Demerara, nestled along the scenic public road of Uitvlugt in the beautiful Essequibo Islands-West Demerara region. Growing up in Guyana, my life has been richly influenced by our vibrant culture, from savoring the comforting taste of fresh roti and curry to enjoying the lively sounds of chutney music at family gatherings. Those moments remind me of the connections we maintain with our roots, even as many of us now share our stories from abroad.
My journey has been shaped by the warmth of the Guyanese community, both at home and in the diaspora. I often find myself chuckling at the quirks of our culture, whether it’s the nostalgia of a simple marmite toast that could easily be mistaken for a lunch staple back home or the gentle ribbing we give each other about the pronunciation of our unique place names—let’s just say, it can get quite amusing! Through the highs and lows, being Guyanese means embracing our identity with pride and a touch of humor.
As I reflect on my experiences, I am grateful for the chance to connect with individuals who share a love for our homeland. Whether it’s discussing the latest news on our oil industry or reminiscing about the flavors of our beloved pastries (sorry, brownies, but you just don’t make the cut!), I believe that our shared stories and laughter help keep the spirit of Guyana alive, no matter where we are in the world. 🇬🇾
