About DHIRA PERSAUD RAMDAN

About Dhira Ramdan

Greetings from the lush landscapes of East Bank Essequibo, where I, Dhira Ramdan, proudly cultivate the rich soils of Pomeroon-Supenaam. As a dedicated farmer, I embrace the land that has been the heartbeat of my family for generations. Here, amidst the vibrant greens and the sounds of nature, I grow a variety of crops, including cassava and plantains, which are integral to our beloved Guyanese dishes like metemgee and cook-up rice. My work is more than just a profession; it is a way to contribute to the community and ensure that the flavors of our culture continue to thrive.

Language plays a vital role in our daily lives here. While English is the official language, at home, we communicate in Creolese, bringing warmth and familiarity to our conversations. For instance, when someone asks, "How yuh doin?" a common response might be "Me a'rite," which reflects the easygoing spirit of our people. This deep-rooted connection to our culture is also echoed in our traditions, festivals, and even during hard times, as we come together as a community to support each other through challenges, just as we did during the recent pandemic.

As a proud Guyanese, I cherish the bonds we share with our diaspora. Whether it’s through the celebration of CARICOM's founding or the exchange of stories about our homeland, I find joy in the unity we foster beyond our borders. I invite everyone to experience the beauty of Guyana, from the mesmerizing Essequibo River to the bustling markets filled with aromatic spices and fresh produce. Together, let us keep our culture alive and thriving, no matter where we are in the world.
