About DIANA LATOYA DE FREITAS

About Diana de Freitas

Greetings! My name is Diana de Freitas, and I proudly call L'Union on the Essequibo Coast my home. Growing up in this vibrant community has instilled in me a deep appreciation for the rich tapestry of cultures that define Guyana. From the tantalizing flavors of pepperpot—a dish that evokes the spirit of our Indigenous heritage—to the various curries and roti that celebrate our East Indian and African roots, food is not just sustenance; it's an experience that brings us together. As someone who enjoys sharing our culinary delights, I often joke about how no one can resist a good clap of roti with some delicious curry!

Living on the Essequibo Coast, I cherish the breathtaking beauty of our natural landscapes, from the serene banks of the Pomeroon River to the lush Iwokrama rainforest. Our history is rich, with landmarks like Fort Zeelandia reminding us of the diverse influences that have shaped our nation. Even though we face challenges, especially with the rapid changes brought forth by our booming oil and gas economy, I remain hopeful and proud of the developments that are taking place. I believe that with leaders like President Irfaan Ali, who is committed to sustainable progress, we can build a future that honors our heritage while embracing innovation.

As a proud Guyanese, I find joy in our cultural connections, whether it's the way we refer to strangers as "aunt" or "uncle" out of respect or the communal spirit that thrives during festivals and gatherings. I invite you to explore our beautiful country, experience our warm hospitality, and savor the diverse flavors that reflect our unique identity. Guyana is more than just a destination; it's a community that welcomes you with open arms!
