Hello! I’m Donna Fredericks, a farmer proudly rooted in the Lower Pom River Katowro Settlement in Pomeroon-Supenaam, Guyana. My days are filled with cultivating the land that has nurtured generations of my family, growing everything from cassava and plantain to the ever-popular rice and sugarcane that we all know and cherish. The rhythms of my work echo the vibrant culture of our nation, where the scent of fresh-cooked pepperpot wafts through the air during special gatherings, bringing everyone together like a warm embrace.
In a country rich in natural beauty—where the Essequibo River stretches majestically and the lush green rainforest sings with life—there are challenges we face daily. While we cultivate our crops, we also cultivate resilience against government corruption and economic disparity. As I've witnessed firsthand, many folks, including my neighbors and friends, struggle for basic necessities while our resources seem to vanish into thin air. Yet, in the face of such adversity, we share a camaraderie that transcends borders, connecting with our diaspora who send remittances back home to help support families like mine.
