Hello! I’m Fiona Watson, a proud resident of Essequibo, specifically the vibrant area of Parika on the East Bank of Pomeroon-Supenaam. Growing up in Guyana, I’ve always cherished the lush landscapes and rich cultural heritage that make our country unique. From the serene banks of the Essequibo River to the bustling markets filled with the aromas of curry and pepperpot, my life here has been a celebration of the diverse traditions that define us as Guyanese.
Being part of a community that embraces its Indian, African, Amerindian, and European roots, I find joy in participating in local festivals and sharing our delicious foods, like roti and pholourie, with friends and family. We often gather to celebrate Diwali and Mashramani, where the colorful displays of lights and music bring us all together. My interactions with the diaspora remind me of the strength of our community, as we navigate life away from home while cherishing the ties that bind us to our beloved Guyana.
As I continue to engage with both locals and expatriates, I’m passionate about preserving our cultural identity and promoting the beauty of Guyana to the world. Whether it’s through sharing stories of my upbringing or helping newcomers navigate their journey, I hold dear the warmth and resilience of our spirit.
