Hello! I’m Beverley Harris, a dedicated teacher based in the beautiful community of Mission, Barima-Waini. Growing up surrounded by the lush landscapes of Guyana, with the Pomeroon River flowing close by, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for our rich culture and heritage. From the vibrant sounds of our local villages to the flavors of our traditional dishes like cook-up rice and pepperpot, my roots are firmly planted in this land that I proudly call home.
As an educator, I strive to instill a sense of pride and love for our country in my students. Whether we’re discussing the significance of Essequibo or exploring the history of our diverse communities, I aim to connect their learning to the rich narratives that define our identity as Guyanese. It brings me joy to see my students embrace their heritage, from the bustling markets in Georgetown to the serene banks of the Pomeroon.
Living and teaching in Guyana, I also recognize the strong connections we share with the diaspora, who carry our stories and culture wherever they go. I often hear laughter when someone mispronounces Essequibo as “Eszkibo,” reminding us that our shared experiences and memories bond us, no matter where we are in the world. Through education, I hope to further nurture our community’s spirit and ensure that the beauty of Guyana continues to thrive.
Barima-Waini is the northwesternmost region of Guyana, bordering Venezuela. Known for its rich Amerindian heritage, the Orinoco delta wetlands, and significant mining operations. Population center is Mabaruma.
