Hello! My name is Harry Lachman, and I proudly hail from the vibrant landscapes of Guyana, specifically from the serene village of Bank Essequibo in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region. Guyana is a beautiful country, known for its lush rainforests, majestic rivers, and rich cultural heritage. Growing up surrounded by the sounds of nature and the warmth of our community has instilled in me a deep appreciation for our traditions, especially when it comes to food. Whether it’s enjoying a plate of pepperpot during Christmas or savoring the sweetness of black cake, these flavors connect me to my roots.
As a resident of Philadelphia, I strive to keep the spirit of my homeland alive in the diaspora. I often reminisce about our lively celebrations, like the annual Mashramani festival, where the streets come alive with music, dance, and the infectious energy of soca and calypso. I am grateful for the connections I’ve made here, where fellow Guyanese gather to share stories and celebrate our culture. Just the other day, I was at a soca event on Liberty Avenue—there’s nothing quite like that feeling of belonging when you hear our music echoing through the streets!
