Hello! My name is Harry Rebai, and I proudly call Upper Pom River Red Village in the beautiful Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana my home. As a labourer, I am deeply connected to my community, where the spirit of hard work and camaraderie defines our daily lives. Growing up surrounded by our lush landscapes and vibrant rivers, I have developed a profound appreciation for the natural beauty that Guyana offers. From the rich, flavorful dishes like pepper pot and metemgee to the rhythmic sounds of our folk music, every aspect of my culture reminds me of the warmth and resilience of our people.
Guyana is often described as a hidden gem, and I cherish sharing its history and significance with others, especially within the diaspora. Many may not realize that while we are a proud South American nation, our rich cultural heritage is influenced by our Caribbean roots. It’s heartening to hear stories from fellow Guyanese living abroad, like those from Australia, who express their love for our country. Whether it’s the tales of ancestral connections or the delicious meals that bring back fond memories, I believe our shared experiences bind us together, no matter where we are in the world.
As I navigate life as a labourer, I find gratitude in the simple joys—spending time with family, celebrating our festivals, and, of course, savoring a good plate of cook-up rice. Guyana may be evolving, especially with recent developments in the oil industry, but I hold steadfast to the belief that true wealth lies in our hearts and the bonds we share. I look forward to connecting with others who share my passion for our beautiful homeland, and together, we can keep the spirit of Guyana alive, no matter the distance.
