Greetings from the beautiful Essequibo Coast! My name is Hayraj Sookranie-Loa, and I proudly call Golden Fleece Estate home. As a fisherman, I spend my days navigating the serene waters of the Pomeroon-Supenaam region, where the rich biodiversity of the rivers provides not just a livelihood, but a way of life deeply intertwined with my culture. The vibrant markets filled with fresh catch and chats over bowls of pepperpot remind me of our shared heritage, as food is a central part of our Guyanese identity.
Growing up, I often reflected on our diverse community, much like the variety found in our local cuisine and festivals. From Diwali celebrations to Mashramani parades, every occasion is a reminder of our Indian roots, and it fills me with pride to see how we all come together in a little slice of “little India.” My experiences have also allowed me to connect with the Guyanese diaspora, where conversations about our homeland often bring nostalgia and joy, along with a tinge of sadness for what has changed over the years.
