Hello! My name is Hemwattie Durbal, and I proudly hail from the vibrant East Bank Essequibo squatting area in Tushen, Pomeroon-Supenaam. As a labourer, I embrace the spirit of hard work that runs deep in our Guyanese culture. Whether it’s planting rice or helping in the local markets, I feel a strong connection to the land and the community that raises us. Growing up in Guyana, I learned to appreciate the beauty of our landscapes, from the majestic Kaieteur Falls to the lush rainforests teeming with life. Though the homes around me thrive with activity today, I remember the times when some were vacant, reflecting the journey of our nation. We are evolving, and with each new construction project, I see hope and a brighter future for our community. It’s fulfilling to witness the changes and to know that the stories of our past shape our present.
Even as I share my roots with the world, I often find myself correcting those who confuse Guyana with Ghana. It's a reminder of our unique identity, rich with history and culture that deserves recognition. Whether I’m chatting with fellow Guyanese abroad or introducing my homeland to those who haven’t yet visited, I take pride in our complicated yet beautiful country.
