Greetings from the Essequibo Coast! I’m Hyacint Dowden-Austin, a proud resident of Westfield in the heart of Pomeroon-Supenaam. Growing up surrounded by the lush landscapes and vibrant communities of Guyana, I carry with me the essence of our rich cultural heritage. From the rhythmic sounds of our folk music to the tantalizing flavors of dishes like pepperpot and roti, my experiences have shaped my passion for sharing the warmth and hospitality that our nation is known for.
Living on the Essequibo Coast provides me with a unique perspective on the rapid changes our country is undergoing, especially with the recent oil boom. While the economic growth brings new opportunities, I remain deeply connected to the traditional ways of life here, such as fishing along the serene rivers like the Upper Pom and enjoying the camaraderie at local gatherings. It's important to me that these beautiful aspects of our culture are not overshadowed by development, and I strive to be a voice for preserving our community’s values.
As someone with ties to the diaspora, I understand the mixed emotions many feel about leaving Guyana for better prospects abroad.
