Hello! I’m Iglesias Vansluytman, a proud resident of the Essequibo Coast, specifically from the vibrant community along the 49 Public Road in New Road, Pomeroon-Supenaam. Growing up in Guyana, I have always been deeply connected to our rich cultural heritage, from the fragrant aromas of pepperpot and roti wafting through my neighborhood to the sounds of lively conversations shared over a game of dominoes. Our land is not just a place; it’s filled with stories, laughter, and the warmth of togetherness that defines us as Guyanese.
Though many of my family members have moved abroad, the essence of our homeland remains strong in my heart. I fondly remember excursions to the majestic Essequibo River, where the beauty of nature rivals that of any tropical paradise, and the camaraderie felt during community events, celebrating everything from Mashramani to Diwali. Even though I sometimes hear misconceptions from those outside our borders—like the belief that we speak French or that Guyana is poor—I take pride in correcting those views and sharing the truth about our incredible land, rich in culture and opportunity.
As a member of the Guyanese diaspora, I cherish the connections we maintain with each other, no matter the distance. Whether it’s exchanging recipes for a delicious cook-up rice or reminiscing about the breathtaking Angel Falls in Venezuela, I believe that our stories and experiences bind us.
