Nestled alongside the lush greenery of the Pomeroon-Supenaam region, our community is rich with culture and history—where every river tells a story, and every village has its own unique rhythm. As a farmer, I embrace the land that nurtures us, growing crops that are a staple in our kitchens, from the hearty cassava to the fragrant rice that accompanies a plate of curry. You can often find me at the local market, sharing a smile and perhaps a little taste of my homemade pepperpot or a slice of sweet black cake!
Living in Essequibo, I draw inspiration from the vibrant Guyanese spirit that thrives in our diaspora. Despite being miles apart, we hold onto our heritage, celebrating our diversity—whether it’s through the sweet sounds of Calypso music or the spirited discussions about our history, from the Portuguese and Spanish influences to our proud Indigenous roots. Just like my fellow Guyanese, I believe we may not always have much in terms of wealth, but we are rich in community and resilience. We often say, “Guyanese got money but we always say we are poor,” reflecting our humor in navigating life’s challenges.
For me, being Guyanese is about connection—whether it's reminiscing about the breathtaking views from the Lower Pom River or discussing the latest news affecting our beloved land with friends abroad. I’m excited to share my journey with you, filled with the joys and struggles of farming, and to bridge the gap between our homeland and the wider world.
