Hello! My name is Roanld James, and I’m proud to call Baramita in the Barima-Waini region my home. As a miner, I embrace the rugged beauty of our landscapes, often reflecting on the rich resources that our land provides. Guyana, with its lush rainforests and vibrant rivers like the Pomeroon and the mighty Essequibo, has shaped my work and my life. Growing up surrounded by the warmth of our close-knit communities, I’ve come to appreciate the stories shared over meals of pepperpot and roti, as well as the sweet, sticky goodness of guava cheese.
Being part of the Guyanese diaspora means carrying a piece of our culture wherever I go. Whether it's sharing stories of our ancestors’ journeys or enjoying a good lime with friends, I find connection in our shared experiences. Though some may say we can be a bit chatty—yes, the gossip is real!—it's all part of the vibrant spirit that defines us. I believe in the importance of solidarity and understanding, especially in times when we face challenges, like the issues regarding development and governance that many of us discuss passionately.
In my heart, I hold a deep respect for the diverse influences that shape Guyana—from our Indian and African roots to the Indigenous traditions that enrich our everyday lives. Baramita may be small, but it’s bursting with potential and culture. I look forward to connecting with others who share a love for our beautiful country and its future!
Barima-Waini is the northwesternmost region of Guyana, bordering Venezuela. Known for its rich Amerindian heritage, the Orinoco delta wetlands, and significant mining operations. Population center is Mabaruma.
