Greetings! My name is Jesmattee Sookhoo, and I proudly call the Essequibo Coast home. Nestled in the vibrant Pomeroon-Supenaam region, my roots run deep in the rich soil of this beautiful land. Here, the landscape is painted with lush greenery and colorful markets where the aroma of freshly cooked pepperpot and roti fills the air, reminding me of the culinary traditions passed down through generations in my family. My father, who came to the U.S. as a teen, ensured that I grew up with these flavors, creating a strong connection to our Guyanese heritage.
As an integral part of my community, I strive to celebrate our unique identity, which blends elements from our diverse cultures, including Indigenous, African, and Indian influences. Whether it's enjoying a day at the Pom River or participating in local festivals, I cherish the sense of belonging that comes from sharing our stories and traditions. I believe that while Guyana might be seen as a hidden gem in South America, its warmth and hospitality bring people together, fostering connections that transcend borders.
