Greetings! My name is Joel Bholaram, and I’m proud to call Essequibo my home. As a mason, I’ve spent years building not just structures, but also connections within our vibrant community. Here in Phase 2 of the New Housing area, I enjoy the lively atmosphere filled with the rich aroma of curry and roti wafting through the streets, reminding me of our diverse cultural heritage. Having been influenced by the history and resilience of Guyana, I often reflect on how far we’ve come. My heart swells with pride seeing our country rise in the global arena, especially with the recent developments driven by our natural resources. I connect with the diaspora in Toronto, New York, and beyond, and I always think of my dear aunty D, who taught me the importance of community before she passed in 2021. Her spirit continues to inspire my work and connections.
As we look to the future, it's crucial to embrace our collective identity as Guyanese. While some may try to create divisions based on our backgrounds, I believe in uniting as one people. Whether cheering for our national football team or reminiscing about the days of wooden houses, we all share a story that deserves to be told.
