Hello! My name is Joycelyn Smith, and I am a proud teacher based in the heart of West Coast Demerara, specifically in 459 Block X New Housing. Growing up amidst the lush landscapes of Guyana, from the vibrant markets of Georgetown to the serene banks of the Essequibo River, I've been deeply inspired by our rich culture and diverse community. Whether it's the sweet aroma of pepperpot during holidays or the vibrant sounds of our local festivals, my roots and experiences shape my teaching philosophy and connect me to my students.
As a passionate educator, I believe in nurturing not just academic growth but also cultural pride. I'm dedicated to sharing the beauty of Guyanese history and traditions with my students, helping them understand their heritage. I often draw parallels between our local stories and global narratives to foster a sense of belonging and identity. It's important to me that they recognize Guyana's unique position on the Caribbean coast of South America, and I aim to instill in them an appreciation for our diverse ancestry that includes Arawak, African, and Indo-Guyanese influences.
Living and working here allows me to engage with the diaspora community, connecting with fellow Guyanese around the world. With the recent developments in our nation, such as the discovery of oil, there’s a palpable sense of hope and opportunity. I’m excited about the future we are building together, and I look forward to contributing to the prosperity of our beloved Guyana, one student at a time.
