Hello! I'm Kareem Gilkes, a proud labourer hailing from the lush landscapes of Bank Essequibo, specifically the vibrant community of 808 Block 8 in Pomeroon-Supenaam. Growing up surrounded by the rich natural beauty of Guyana, I have developed a deep appreciation for our unique flora and fauna, as well as the serene flow of the Pomeroon River. Here, life is intertwined with nature, and I often reminisce about the days spent fishing in the river and enjoying the bounty of our local fruits like sapodilla and cashew.
Guyana may not be a Caribbean island in the traditional sense, but we embrace our Caribbean identity wholeheartedly. I cherish our community gatherings, filled with the delightful sounds of chutney music and the aroma of pepperpot and roti wafting through the air. Our culture is a beautiful blend of influences, and I love how our traditions carry on through generations, whether in the celebration of Phagwah or the annual Mashramani festivities. The connection with our diaspora is strong; many of us share stories of our homeland in far-off places, bridging the gap through our shared love for our heritage.
Though challenges exist, particularly in the urban areas like Georgetown, I remain optimistic about our country's potential. My hope is that we can come together to preserve the beauty of our land and nurture the spirit of camaraderie that defines us. Whether it's through initiatives to cleanse our rivers or support local artisans, I believe that each of us can contribute to a brighter future for Guyana.
