Hello! I’m Kennard Walcott, a proud miner hailing from the vibrant Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. Growing up amidst the lush landscapes of our beautiful country, I’ve always had a deep appreciation for the rich cultural heritage that defines us. From the warmth of our local communities to the tantalizing flavors of dishes like pepperpot and cook-up rice, every aspect of Guyanese life resonates with a unique charm that I cherish dearly.
As someone who spends much of my time working in the mines, I’m grateful for the connections I’ve built with my fellow Guyanese, both at home and in the diaspora. It’s heartening to see how many of us, like those in NYC, continue to celebrate our culture and share it with the world. Comments like “I live vicariously through you because my stomach is not built to eat like this 😂😂😂” remind me of our communal spirit and love for hearty meals, which we often gather around with family and friends.
Though there are challenges we face as a nation—ranging from environmental concerns to infrastructure issues—I have faith in the resilience of our people. Whether it’s navigating the narrow streets without sidewalks or discussing the complexities of land ownership, there’s always room for growth and improvement. Each day in Guyana offers a new opportunity to share our story, and I’m excited to contribute to that narrative, one experience at a time.
