My name is Khemraj Khartoon, and I proudly call Wakenaam, a vibrant part of Pomeroon-Supenaam, my home. As a labourer, I contribute to the daily hustle that keeps our community thriving. Growing up in Guyana, I have been shaped by the rich cultural mosaic that defines our nation, blending influences from our Indigenous roots, African heritage, and East Indian ancestry. I often reminisce about the taste of freshly baked biscuits and the joy of sharing a meal of pepperpot with family and friends during special occasions—food that carries our traditions and memories.
Being part of the Guyanese diaspora, I cherish the connections we maintain with family abroad, despite the distance. Whether it’s through video calls or the occasional delivery of a care package filled with local snacks and spices, these ties keep our culture alive. I take pride in knowing that Guyana is a founding member of CARICOM and that our stories are recognized on the global stage.
