Hello! I’m Latanya John, a proud resident of Lodge Essequibo Coast, nestled along the picturesque Pomeroon-Supenaam region. My love for Guyana runs deep, from the vibrant markets where we indulge in fresh, spicy pepperpot to the serene banks of the Pomeroon River, where life moves at a pace that encourages reflection and connection with nature. Guyana is often perceived as a tiny nation, but its vast natural wonders, like the majestic Kaieteur Falls and lush jungles, truly embody the richness of our homeland.
As a Guyanese, I take immense pride in our cultural heritage. We celebrate our diverse roots, which bring together influences from Indigenous peoples, African, Indian, Chinese, and European cultures. I enjoy sharing our culinary delights, from roti that fills the belly and warms the heart to the vibrant tastes of cook-up rice that remind me of family gatherings and community celebrations. Each dish tells a story, and I believe food has a unique way of connecting us, whether we are in Guyana or among the diaspora.
Being part of the Guyanese diaspora means I carry the essence of my homeland with me wherever I go. I cherish the connections I’ve built with others who share the same pride in our identity, like celebrating our achievements on the global stage, including our recognition at the UN. Our journey as a nation continues, and I am excited to contribute to the rich narrative of Guyana, while always looking forward to the day I can explore every river and island, including Coporoto Island and Yaramai, to further deepen my love for this beautiful land.
