Hello! My name is Leona Sancharan, and I proudly call the Essequibo Coast my home. Nestled along the serene banks of the Pomeroon River, my life revolves around the vibrant community of Somerset, where the rich sounds of local music and the aromas of traditional dishes like pepperpot and cook-up rice fill the air. Living here, I cherish the warmth and hospitality that define our culture, which is deeply influenced by our diverse heritage, from Indigenous roots to East Indian traditions.
Though many of my family have migrated abroad, I hold onto the hope of reconnecting with them in our beautiful homeland. The ties to my culture are strong, and even from a distance, I feel an unwavering connection to our shared experiences—be it through the stories of the Upper Pomeroon or memories of celebrating festivals like Diwali. I believe these connections keep our community alive, reminding us of the importance of family and shared identity, no matter where we find ourselves.
As a resident of the Essequibo Coast, I take pride in contributing to our local community and celebrating the unique aspects of Guyanese life.
