Hello! My name is Leonard Garraway, and I hail from the beautiful Lower Pom River area of Hackney Canal in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. As a dedicated labourer, I spend my days working hard to provide for my family and community. Life here is vibrant, filled with the rich sounds of the river and the warm smiles of my neighbors, who all share a deep connection to our land and culture. Guyana may not always be portrayed in the best light, but to me, it’s home—a place where the essence of our people shines through, despite the challenges we face.
Growing up, I’ve been surrounded by the flavors of our local cuisine, from the spicy pepperpot to the sweet delights of cassava pone. These dishes tell the story of our diverse heritage and are a reminder of the warmth that Guyanese hospitality brings to our tables. I often reminisce about the bustling markets in Georgetown and the serene beauty of our rivers, like the mighty Essequibo, where families gather to enjoy picnics and fishing. Though many of us have ventured abroad seeking better opportunities, our hearts remain tethered to this land and its people.
As I navigate life as a labourer in Guyana, I hold on to the hope that our next generation will see a brighter future for our country. It’s essential that we acknowledge our challenges—like poverty and corruption—but also celebrate the resilience and kindness of our community. I look forward to sharing more about my experiences and the beauty of my homeland as I continue to connect with fellow Guyanese, both near and far.
