Greetings! My name is Danasha Lewis, and I proudly call Manawarin in the Barima-Waini region of Guyana my home. As a farmer, I am deeply connected to the land and the rich agricultural traditions that sustain our vibrant community. Growing up amidst the lush landscapes, I've come to appreciate the importance of fresh produce and the unique flavors it brings to our diverse culinary scene—from the delightful pepperpot to the sweet and tangy taste of pineapples seasoned with galice salt. My days are often filled with the rhythms of nature, where the beauty of our environment inspires me to cultivate both crops and a sense of community.
In my journeys as a farmer, I have seen the changes taking place in Guyana, particularly with the burgeoning oil industry. Just as my fellow Guyanese hope for a prosperous future, I believe it's essential for us to harness our natural resources wisely, fostering education and urban development so that all can benefit, just as nations like Norway have done. I often reminisce about the communal markets that pop up in every corner, where neighbors come together to share not just goods, but also stories and laughter over a shared meal.
Though I am rooted in my homeland, I feel a deep connection to the Guyanese diaspora around the world. Stories from friends and family abroad remind me of the warmth and resilience that define us. Together, we cherish our culture, whether it be through music, dialect, or the delicious dishes we prepare, as we long for the day to reunite over a hearty plate of local cuisine.
