As a loving mother and home manager, I find joy in nurturing my family and keeping our home vibrant with the flavors and traditions that define our rich culture. Guyana is a land of contrasts, from the lush greenery of the rainforest to the vibrant energy of our towns. While we may face challenges like improving our drainage systems or navigating the sometimes narrow roads, the resilience and creativity of our people shine through. I often reminisce about bustling markets filled with fresh produce and the aroma of our favorite dishes wafting through the air. I always make it a point to try local recipes and share them with friends and family, especially those in the diaspora missing the tastes of home.
Engaging with the diaspora community, especially those in NYC, is a source of connection and pride for me. We share stories of our homeland, reminisce about our childhoods, and, of course, discuss the best spots for Guyanese food! I believe that no matter where we are, we carry a piece of Guyana with us, and it’s this unique blend of culture, resilience, and community that fuels my passion for life.
