Hello! I'm Mavis Toby, a proud resident of Essequibo Arouka Tapakuma in the beautiful Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. Growing up surrounded by the lush landscapes and vibrant communities of Essequibo has deeply influenced my appreciation for our local culture, from the rich flavors of pepperpot and metemgee to the rhythmic beats of the tassa during Mashramani celebrations. Each dish and dance tells a story, connecting us to our ancestors and to each other, no matter where in the world we may find ourselves.
As a part of the Guyanese diaspora, I often reflect on the sentiments shared by many, such as the pride we hold for our land, regardless of our physical location. We may not be directly by the Caribbean Sea, but we identify wholeheartedly as Caribbean people, with the headquarters of CARICOM right in our midst. It fills me with joy to see our homeland's growth and development, as echoed by others who share the same love for our sweet home, Guyana.
Through my work and interactions, I strive to uplift our community, celebrate our heritage, and foster connections that bridge the gap between home and abroad. Whether it's sharing stories of Essequibo's beauty or connecting with fellow Guyanese around the globe, I believe in the power of our shared experiences to inspire and unite us all.
