Greetings from the heart of Essequibo! My name is Melissa Prince-August, and I proudly call Pomeroon-Supenaam my home. Growing up in Guyana, I’ve been immersed in the vibrant culture that defines our beautiful land, from the lush landscapes of the Essequibo River to the rich culinary flavors that dance at our dinner tables. Whether it’s a hearty plate of pepperpot or a sweet slice of black cake during the holidays, food in Guyana is more than sustenance; it’s a reflection of our history and community.
As a resident of the 9 Pump Station Street area, I’m fortunate to live close to the stunning natural beauty that surrounds us. The warm smiles of my neighbors and the lively chatter about the latest cricket matches or local festivals remind me of the strong bonds we share. I often reflect on the stories of our diaspora, especially when I hear about the laughter and pride that comes from our shared experiences—like the way we all cringe (and laugh!) when outsiders mispronounce our beloved town names and cultural references.
My mission is to celebrate and promote our unique Guyanese heritage while connecting with fellow nationals both at home and abroad.
