Hello! My name is Mohamed Murad, and I proudly hail from the lush landscapes of Essequibo, specifically from the heart of the Pomeroon-Supenaam region at 1654 Main Road South. As a cane cutter, I have dedicated my life to the sugarcane fields that are vital to our economy and culture. There’s something special about the early morning sun rising over the fields, the sweet scent of sugarcane in the air, and the camaraderie shared among fellow workers that embodies the spirit of our community.
Growing up in Guyana, I have been deeply influenced by our vibrant culture, from the rich flavors of cook-up rice and pepperpot to the sounds of chutney music that echo through our villages. I take pride in being part of a community that celebrates its diversity, with influences from Indigenous peoples, African, Indian, Chinese, and Portuguese heritage. It’s this blend that makes our festivals, such as Mashramani and Diwali, a joyous occasion filled with food, dance, and connection. Our landmarks, like the Essequibo River and the majestic Kaieteur Falls, remind me of the natural beauty we are blessed with.
Though many of us from Guyana have ventured far and wide, I carry my roots with me wherever I go, cherishing the warmth and resilience of our diaspora. Whether it's connecting with fellow Guyanese in far-off places or sharing a meal with friends and family, the love for our homeland remains strong.
