About MOHAMED NAZEER UMRAO

About Mohamed Umrao

Greetings! My name is Mohamed Umrao, and I am proud to call Pomeroon-Supenaam home. Nestled along the beautiful Pomeroon River, my community is a vibrant mix of cultures and traditions, reflecting the rich history of Guyana. Growing up surrounded by the lush greenery and the warmth of my neighbors, I have always appreciated the deep connections that unite us, both as Guyanese and as descendants of a resilient lineage shaped by our shared colonial past.

As a resident of Essequibo, I take great joy in celebrating our local cuisine, from the savory delights of pepperpot and metemgee to the refreshing taste of fresh coconut water. I believe that food is a powerful way to connect with our heritage, and I often host gatherings that bring together friends and family to enjoy these traditional dishes while sharing stories and laughter. Returning to Guyana after time in the diaspora has only deepened my love for our land, and I cherish the opportunity to explore places like the Rodney Archive, where I discover the untold stories of our laborers and the collective strength of our communities.

My hope is to see Indo and Afro Guyanese unite, recognizing that we are all shaped by the legacies of colonization. Together, we can foster a spirit of cooperation and understanding that honors our past while building a brighter future for all. Whether it’s through engaging discussions or collaborative efforts to uplift our community, I am committed to contributing to the vibrant mosaic of Guyanese life, encouraging both locals and those from the diaspora to reconnect with our roots and celebrate our extraordinary country.
